My Favorite Values from the Eight Values of Free Expression Vault

Free expression serves as the cornerstone of democratic societies, fostering dialogue, understanding, and progress. The Eight Values of Free Expression encapsulate the diverse facets of this fundamental right, each playing a unique role in building a better society. Among these values, the promotion of tolerance stands out as the most crucial, closely aligned with individual self-fulfillment, echoing the significance of allowing people to express themselves freely without fear of censorship.

Promoting Tolerance is a value that resonates deeply with me, as it embodies the essence of free expression. The unrestricted use of free speech, even when misused, serves as a bridge connecting individuals to the broader world outside their front door. In a society where diverse perspectives coexist without much harmony, this value becomes vital in preventing isolation and promoting intellectual growth. It acknowledges that the unrestricted flow of ideas, even those we may disagree with, is essential for a thriving and working community.

This value is closely related with Individual Self-Fulfillment, emphasizing the right of individuals to express their thoughts without the threat of suppression. The freedom to articulate one's beliefs fosters personal growth and empowerment. In a world where conformity can be a hinderance, the ability to express oneself becomes a means of achieving fulfillment. Both Promoting Tolerance and Individual Self-Fulfillment underscore the importance of free expression in creating a society that values diversity, inclusion, and the flourishing of individual identities.

Another value that holds personal significance for me is Protect Dissent. It serves as a reminder that governments exist to safeguard citizens from conflicts and provide a framework for law and order. This value challenges the notion that dissent is a threat; rather, it says that dissent is a natural part of societal evolution. A government committed to protecting dissent recognizes the need for change and growth, adapting to the evolving dynamics of the society it aims to preserve. because we as a people first established the government to protect people from conflicts and to provide law and order. This meaning that it was not made to oppress nor simply suggest, but that it was supposed to grow and change along with the evolving society it was made to preserve.

In the contemporary world, one can witness the value of Stable Change in action. The advent of social media and various online platforms has provided a space for people to voice their grievances and connect with like-minded individuals globally. The ability to express discontent, no matter how minute, has become a powerful tool in preventing the escalation of conflicts into wars or divisive battles. Social media serves as an outlet for individuals to channel their energy, frustration, and passion constructively, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

The Eight Values of Free Expression collectively contribute to the resilience and vitality of a libertarian society. Promoting Tolerance and Individual Self-Fulfillment work hand in hand to create an environment where diverse voices can coexist harmoniously. Protect Dissent reminds us of the importance of questioning authority and advocating for change within the bounds of a lawful and orderly society. Stable Change, observed in the digital age, demonstrates how free expression can serve as a safety valve, preventing the build-up of societal tensions.

In conclusion, the Eight Values of Free Expression are not isolated principles but interconnected elements that shape the fabric of a thriving society. As we navigate the hardships of the modern world, these values guide us toward a future where free expression is not just a right but needed for progress, understanding, and social connection. Embracing and upholding these values ensures that the fundamental tenets of democracy remain resilient in the face of evolving challenges.

Rulings on The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is one that was founded in September 1789 in the budding time of the American culture. Over the past 200+ years they have assisted on millions upon millions of cases involving the reformation and push towards our fair, free world.
Justices are invited to/nominated to being apart of the Court by the current president and that person's ballot is then sent to the Senate for final deliberation and voting to secure their position. One Justice even labels the appointment like so: "Being appointed to the Supreme Court is like being struck by Lightning."
Why Should You Care?
In all reality, unless you yourself are facing a case involving questions of constitutional law, appeals from convictions dealing with death sentences, or legal questions of major significance, you most likely will not have to worry about the Supreme Court calling or even knowing your name. Even with that being said their role is a much needed and vital piece of our functioning heart of America. This can be best seen in their one unspoken motto -and the American legal system's much needed personality- that "Impartiality is Key." This motto being the most important takeaway from all that the court does.
As I stated previously, people are elected into an empty position within the chambers by the people's president. In total their are nine chairs available and each person is prided on their vast opinions and diverse backgrounds. In other words - They are NOT meant to agree on most (maybe even any) cases brought before them.
One case that could shed light to how they operate could be the Dred Scott Decision from March of 1857. It was a case that questioned and ultimately denied the legality of black citizenship in America and declared the Missouri Compromise to be unconstitutional.
As I learned while watching our class videos on the Supreme Court rulings, "The Justices cannot act until an issue is brought to them." When they are given the power to act they will act but it cannot be before asked of them. Something that gratefully surprised me and provided a bit of relief found within that though, is that the Justices are specifically chosen to fight with each other, to not agree on these larger than one life issues and debate them so that each side and voice may be heard. The council is given an odd number that even in the case of a split decision, a chose will be made.
Overall...
The Supreme Court has played a pivotal role in shaping the American legal landscape over the past 200+ years. Their nomination by the president and confirmation by the Senate, these Justices serve in a crucial capacity, addressing significant legal matters that impact the nation. The Court deliberately chosen for their diverse backgrounds and opinions, emphasizes the importance of disagreement and debate in reaching decisions on substantial issues. Ultimately, the Supreme Court stands as a cornerstone of the American legal system, embodying the principle that impartiality and robust debate are fundamental to its functioning.

My News on The News

Something I have been made aware of time and time again is how susceptible I am to all the many "sources" of news there are out in the world. If you asked me about any current event I'd have to look at you dumbfounded, but if you TOLD me about any current event, that was it, whatever you said was fact to me - whether the sky was purple, dogs can talk, or the Sun revolved around the Earth, to me it made no difference as, world events did not trouble my adolescent mind. And while I am still not extremely engrossed in the current events of the world, I have grown better at learning what's going on around me and where my sources come from. So here are my top 5 most reliable news sources, in order:

  • The Weather Channel:
    • As basic as it is, the Weather Channel is still one of the most trusted program to use when figuring out what is coming and the damage that was left in it's wake. Just recently, an incredibly powerful Storm/Monsoon caused the emergency close of schools across the nation and with the knowledge that my school would choose to stay open, I went to my weather channel app to find out what times to stay inside and just what to prepare for when the day came. I don't just recommend the channel as an article to read and forget about, but download it to your devices and before going out into only God knows what type of weather, open it and step out ready every morning (Especially living in the state of North Carolina where one day can hold five different climates)!
  • CNN:

    • This particular source is one that I personally grew up with as I still remember going from 'CNN10' to just 'CNN' as it was one of the largest "big kid" changes in my life. CNN has a global reach and keeps a vast network of reporters and correspondents that deliver news from diverse perspectives and even goes as far as to thoroughly fact check every source they interview. A source that prioritizes on site voices to describe all that is happening gives the most in depth view on the world around us.
  • BBC
    • BBC stands as a trustworthy source. They clarity they use to deliverer news to make it accessible for even the most tech illiterate of people or those who don't care for the influx of news that doesn't especially pertain to them. On to of that, one can appreciate their commitment to fostering a sense of reliability that aligns with me personally because of its unbiased take on information, even political. Recently I've come to learn of their vast storage of podcasts and short to-the-point videos for me to pick up and use as a fast-recap of what is going on outside of my doors.
  • Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update:
    • As unexpected as this may be, Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update truly is my favorite go-to for legit news updates. The hosts never fail to to bring the humor and sarcasm to each update adding just enough knowledge to keep me informed. Don't get me wrong it truly is pure satire, but the methodology to the reel helps me stay informed on all areas of the news broadcast (sports, popular culture, politics...), without making me feel like I'm drawing through a bullet pointed lecture. It's like sitting down with a best friend who makes classes, fun and boring lessons, interesting! It simply cannot be viewed as a "traditional" news source, but in a despairing world, it is a necessary -refreshingly funny- aid to staying connected.
  • Google News
    • Then my all time favorite news search engine; Google! As I've stated, I am not a news savvy person and am definitely not good with a wide influx of information either, and so google has become my perfect in-between. Not only is it able to aggregate news from various sources, but it takes tally on my likes and dislikes and tailors what answers it gives me based off of that (Want to know who dated so-and-so? Well I know you like this movie and guess what? This actor dated so-and-so and now I will put their name at the top of the list so you can see it first and be surprised)! It's the best personalized news collaborator that one can ask for all free of charge! Even in a world of busy bees, Google caters. With a feature called News Showcase, a tab that keeps the current events broadcasted by various different outlets together to sort through at your own content, Google truly goes to reach all it can.
